Im Jahr 1945, in einer schottischen Bergarbeitersiedlung: Der achtjährige Jamie wächst mit seinem großen Bruder Tommy bei seiner Großmutter auf. Zur psychisch kranken Mutter, die in einer Anstalt lebt, haben sie keinen Kontakt. Und auch die Väter der beiden Halbbrüder glänzen durch Abwesenheit. Jamie treibt sich herum, meidet aber die anderen Kinder des Dorfes. Stattdessen pflegt er eine enge Freundschaft zu dem deutschen Kriegsgefangenen Helmuth, dem er ein paar Brocken Englisch beibringt. Als dieser das Dorf verlassen muss, ist Jamie wieder ganz seiner Einsamkeit überlassen. Sein einziger Halt ist seine Großmutter mütterlicherseits. Von der Zeit in seiner Kindheit, die er bei ihr verbracht hat, handelt dieser erste Teil der autobiografischen Trilogie, der mit "Meine Kindheit" überschrieben ist. Nach dem Tod der Großmutter werden die Brüder gewaltsam auseinandergerissen. Tommy lebt von nun an im Waisenhaus.
