Manuel Tur y Andreu Ramallo tienen diez años cuando la Guerra Civil llega a la isla de Mallorca. Su primer encuentro con la crueldad de la guerra se produce al ver cómo fusilan al padre de un amigo frente a la tapia del cementerio. Transcurridos diez años, Manuel y Ramallo vuelven a encontrarse en un sanatorio para enfermos de tuberculosis, situación que afrontan de manera diferente: Ramallo procura olvidar la enfermedad mientras que Manuel se refugia en la religión. La amistad entre ellos se basa en la fascinación que siente Manuel por la vitalidad de Ramallo y en la admiración de éste por la entereza de Manuel. Pero poco a poco las creencias religiosas de Manuel entran en crisis al darse cuenta de que lo que siente por Ramallo es algo más que amistad.
