Valós történet alapján készült háborús film, Emmanuil Kazakevič prózájából. A történet 1942 nyarán játszódik, mikor Wehrmachtnak sikerül a Kakázusra és a Volgáig jutnia, és elérnie,hogy a szovjet hadsereg összetartása megtörjön.Csak olyan kemény rendeletek árán sikerül megállítani a németek támadását, hogy minden szovjet katonát, aki meghátrál, azonnal le kell lőniük a társainak. Éppen ebben a nehéz időszakban következik be a fordulat Ogarkov hadnagy életében is, megtagadja a parancsot, és megszökik, amiért a katonai bíróság halálra ítéli. Ezzel indul a már lefokozott katona, Ogarkov és bajtársa, Dzsarabajev hosszú útja.
