　　二十世纪五十年代初期，当年抵抗法西斯侵略的战士裴里康，现在是多瑙河堤岸的守护人。影片开头，他在堤上巡守。土堤上的绿草修剪出“光荣属于伟大的领袖” 字样。这时走来一条狗，在草地上撒尿。裴里康十分惊慌。因为他经常由于做错什么而被关进监狱。他曾由于肉食不足，偷偷杀掉自己养的猪而被投入监狱，后被抵抗运动时的战友保释出狱。他当游泳池的管理人员时，把一个当地党的领导人某将军独占的游泳池，改为向一般市民开放的公共游泳池，那位将军在开放那天到场一看，当场晕倒在地。他当上某公园的负责人时，把“幽灵庄园”改造成为“社会主义幽灵庄园”。进入庄园，首先映人眼帘的是马克思的画像，接着是—张在世界地图上边有幽灵袭来的图画，图画的题词是马克思《共产党宣言》开头的名言“一个幽灵，共产主义的幽灵，在欧洲徘徊。”接着，两个衣衫褴褛的人突然出现，双手带着锁链，象征着他们“失去的只是锁链”那句话。后来，裴里康被迫充当揭发检举伙伴是间谍的证人，他被要求用心练习“证词”。这个正直的人，在法庭上不背 “证词”而说了真话，因而被判处死刑。在执刑的当天，由于政治形势的变化，裴里康又—次接到获释通知。 　　影片拍完后被禁映十年，原因据说是清洗时代牺牲者的遗属对这种用喜剧形式表现当年悲剧的作法不能接受。影片对斯大林主义和“个人崇拜的时代”进行的无情的讽刺的确十分辛辣。时代的牺牲者裴里康被写成一个—直到最后还不能理解事态真相的浑浑噩噩的人物，也富有深刻的含义。影片在揭露过去错误的同时，经常促使身处旋涡中的人们进行自省。这种含蓄的批评态度让人深思。鲍乔不愧是匈牙利著名的老导演，拍过数十部影片，本片是他最著名的影片，见解深刻，艺术手法炉火纯青。1973年获得巴拉兹奖金。
