Americké biografické hudební drama vypráví o vzestupu a pádu legendárního afroamerického rappera Christophera Wallacea, který se proslavil jako „The Notorious B.I.G." Film sleduje jeho závratnou cestu k úspěchu - od mládí, jež strávil v 70. letech v Brooklynu, až po tragickou smrt v roce 1997. Malý Christopher získal stipendium na soukromé katolické škole a jeho matka udělala všechno pro to, aby ho uchránila před nástrahami ulice. Bylo to však marné. Už jako teenager začne prodávat drogy, ale jeho život se změní, když přítelkyně Jane otěhotní. Narození dcery ho nasměruje k rozhodnutí vydělávat a být nezávislý - ať už legálně nebo jinou cestou. Jeho rappová nahrávka se náhodou dostane do rukou hiphopového impresária Seana „Puffyho" Combse a ten z něho doslova přes noc vytvoří senzační afroamerický kulturní fenomén. Zároveň s úspěchem však přicházejí nové tlaky a osud má s Christopherem jiné plány...
