’Walesa – håbets mand’ skildrer Lech Walesas liv i årene fra det første arbejderoprør i 1970 og frem til Solidarnosc-sejren ved det første frie valg i Polen i 1989. Filmen følge Lech Walesa, der starter som elektriker på Leninværftet, frem til tiden som Polens karismatisk oppositionsleder. Og han bliver imponerende gestaltet af Robert Wieckiewicz, som spiller Walesa med fuld skrue på gavtyvesmilet og masser af kløgtige, sjove og skæve esser i ærmet – hele vejen fra skibsværftet i Gdansk til Nobelprisen – som regel med familien og hustruen Danuta med på første parket. Alt i alt en storslået, lærerig og stærkt underholdende rejse tilbage til tiden før Murens fald.
