Leviathan udspilles i en vindblæst by på Kolahalvøen, hvor Kolja har indrettet sig med sin anden hustru og sin søn fra første ægteskab. Uheldigvis har byens anløbne borgmester udset sig lige netop den grund, som Koljas hus befinder sig på, til et større byggeprojekt. Kolja engagerer en gammel advokatven, men individet har ikke stærke odds, når først magtbrynden ruller sig ud. De iskolde horisonter domineres af skibsvrag og skelettet fra en strandet hval, men selv om symbolikken står lysende klart, lodder Leviathan store menneskelige, moralske og politiske dybder. Mange har sammenlignet med salig Tarkovskijs stærkeste film, men Zvjagintsevs værk er mest af alt af en monomentalitet, som vi bedst kender det fra den store russiske litteratur.
