Gårdejer Hans Sværke har på grund af spillelidenskab bragt sin gård på fallittens rand og åbner derved muligheden for den rige proprietær Karius til at nå sit mål - at overtage gården. Men sognefoged Mikkelsen kautionerer og redder i første omgang Sværke, som så forpagter gården. Sværke dør, og hans dygtige søn Niels, overtager forpagtningen. Han og røgterdatteren, Grethe, er glade for hinanden, og Niels får sat igen-nem at hun bliver ansat på gården. Men Karius datter, der er forelsket i Niels, brænder af jalousi og overtaler sin far til at udnytte Niels svære økonomiske situation og overtage gården. Det ser sort ud for Niels, der er trængt op i et hjørne af den rige proprietær. Men en dag under pløjningen ser han noget glimte i mulden...
