Jack Marcus ist ein ehemaliger Autor, der aber seit Jahren nichts mehr veröffentlicht hat und eigentlich ausschließlich von seinem guten Ruf lebt. Seine Tätigkeit als Englischlehrer bringt ihm keine Erfüllung; er versucht, seinen Schülern die Schönheit der Wörter näherzubringen, ist jedoch immer wieder über deren Lethargie erschüttert und ertränkt seine beginnende Depression im Alkohol. Verschlimmert wird dieser Zustand durch Dina Delsanto, die als Kunstlehrerin ihren Dienst an der Schule aufnimmt und den bisher beschaulichen Schulalltag mit ihrer sehr unterkühlten Art schnell auf den Kopf stellt. Damit nicht genug, gerät sie mit Jack in Streit darüber, ob nun die Kunst oder die Sprache wichtiger für die Menschen seien. Die kleine Streiterei wächst sich zu einer heftigen Rivalität zwischen den beiden Lehrkräften aus, die in Jacks Kündigung gipfelt. Er sieht nur einen Weg, seinen Job zu behalten – und fasst einen folgenschweren Entschluss...
