Im Nebraska des 19. Jahrhunderts lebt die alleinstehende und gottesfürchtige Siedlerin Mary Bee Cuddy in einer kleinen Grenzstadt umgeben von den endlosen Weiten der Prärie. Das Leben ist hart, der Kampf mit den Begebenheiten zehrt an ihr, ihre Einsamkeit macht es nur noch schlimmer. Drei andere Pioniersfrauen, Arabella, Theoline und Gro, verlieren aufgrund der Monotonie und Härte ihres Daseins schlicht den Verstand. Mary Bee beschließt daraufhin, die drei in eine Methodistengemeinde im zivilisierteren Teil des Landes zu führen, damit man sich um sie kümmern kann. Auf ihrer Reise trifft Mary Bee auf den Outlaw George Briggs, dem sie das Leben rettet. Er begleitet sie von da an und die beiden kommen sich näher. Obwohl Briggs sie überzeugen will, durch und durch verdorben und damit nicht der richtige Mann für sie zu sein, sieht sie in ihm viel mehr...
