Ray Kroc ist als Vertreter für Milkshake-Maschinen in Illinois unterwegs und hat wenig Erfolg – bis er bei seinen Touren auf die Brüder Mac und Dick McDonald und ihr kleines Burger-Restaurant trifft. Die Brüder McDonald haben die Arbeitsprozesse so optimiert, dass der bestellte Burger nur wenige Sekunden später beim Kunden ist. Ray ist begeistert und sieht das enorme Potential der Idee: McDonald’s soll zum Franchise werden. Zum Entsetzen seiner Frau Ethel riskiert er sein ganzes Vermögen und sogar das geliebte Eigenheim. Und doch läuft sein Vorhaben nicht richtig an, bis ihm schließlich eine zündende Idee kommt – von nichts und niemandem lässt sich Ray von seinem ambitionierten Plan, ein Imperium zu erschaffen, abhalten, nicht einmal von den eigentlichen McDonald’s-Gründern…
