1798-ban egy franciaországi erdőben vadászok egy 12 év körüli fiút találnak, aki vadember módjára él az erdőben. Beszélni nem tud, csak artikulátlanul kiáltozik, ruhátlanul járkál, gyökereket és makkot eszik. Miután rátalálnak, a Süketnémák Intézetébe viszik és Dr. Itard (François Truffaut) kezd el foglalkozni vele.
