Bár a címszereplő Balthazár egy szamár, nem ezópuszi tanmesét és nem is kalandos állattörténetet látunk. Bresson szavaival: "A szamár ugyanazokat a szakaszokat éli át, mint egy ember: gyermekkorában a becézgetést, érett korában a munkát, a tálentumot az élet feleútján, s a végső misztikát, mely a halált közvetlenül megelőzi. A szamár hordozza a relikviákat, s meghal aztán, mert az emberek bűneit hordozza." A szamár mellett, mely különféle bűnöket - gőgöt, iszákosságot, lustaságot, durvaságot, pénzvágyat, a kiszolgáltatottak megalázását - megtestesítő emberekkel találkozik, a film másik hőse Marie, aki szintén védtelen és vétlen teremtmény. Kettőjük sorsa párhuzamos, mindketten áldozatok. Marie-t Anne Wiazemsky játssza, a legnagyobb modern katolikus író, Claude Mauriac unokahuga. A későbbi híres Godard-színésznő (és Godard nagy szerelme) itt még ismeretlen kislány, kinek gyermeki szépsége, tisztasága és ártatlansága egészen különleges és megejtő. (port.hu)
