Handlingen i Stanley Kubricks kultklassiker er lagt til "The Overlook Hotel", hvor forfatterspiren Jack Torrance blir ansatt som vaktmester for å passe på hotellet over vinteren. Han blir fortalt at det er vanlig at hotellet snør inne i løpet av vinteren, så han og familien må regne med å være totalt isolert i flere måneder.
